This is what is referred to as math phobia, and it can impede academic progress and restrict employment opportunities. Nonetheless, it is not impossible. With the right approaches and attitude any one can overcome their fear of mathematics therefore becoming confident about numbers.

Math phobia may be associated with feelings of dread, anxiousness or panic when faced with arithmetic problems. It often results from earlier negative experiences, societal perceptions, teaching techniques as well as lack of self-belief. Grasping these underlying causes would be the first step towards addressing the fear for mathematics.
